Today I’m going to go through a digital painting I did a few months ago. It’s a portrait. When I painted this I used a similar method to the one I used yesterday:
- Sketch
- Base colours
- Adding layers of detail and shading
Because I built up this painting in layers I have been able to go back and see the way the image progressed. Here is a gallery of various stages of the painting. Click any picture to get into gallery mode and see bigger, clearer versions of each image:

Interestingly, while I was looking at all of this, I saw that if I left the sketch in, on top of the finished work, (removing any parts of the sketch which distracted from the final picture) I ended up with a picture in the kind of style I want for my comic art. Like this:
